The Cliffs of Moher attract over 1 million visitors every year and are one of Ireland’s most visited tourist attraction. The beauty of the Cliffs of Moher is that they offer a totally multi-faceted experience of Ireland’s incredible west coast – as much a historical landmark as they are a geographical wonder, conservation hotspot and area of immense natural richness and importance.The Cliffs stretch for 8km (5 miles) and reach 214m (702 feet) in height at their highest point.
The Cliffs take their name from a ruined promontory fort ‘Mothar’ – which was demolished during the Napoleonic wars in the early 1800’s, to make room for a signal tower at Hag’s Head. The word ‘Mothar’ in old Gaelic means ‘the ruin of a fort’.
On a clear day the Cliffs over breathtaking views of the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, the Twelve Pins and the Maum Turk mountains in Connemara as well as the Dingle Peninsula and Blasket Islands in Kerry.
At The Cliffs
There are 3 primary viewing platforms to view the cliffs. O’Brien’s tower also offers breathtaking views. On a clear day you can see across to the Aran Islands: Inis Oírr, Inis Méain and Inis Mór. Looking to the left you capture the whole of Liscannor Bay with Lahinch in the distance and Liscannor village in the foreground. Looking to the right you are met with beautiful views of Galway Bay.
The Cliffs of Moher visitor experience comprises a state-of-the-art-underground visitor centre containing exhibits and interactive experiences. it contains a wealth of fascinating information and displays to delight, inform and fascinate visitors of all ages. The visitor centre also contains a cafe offering the delicious and diverse tastes of County Clare and a souvenir shop.
The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience is open on a year round basis except on 24th, 25th and 26th December. Opening hours vary depending on the time of the year. For more information you can visit the official website here.
